Quebec Elementary School Guide

Build strong foundations before secondary school.

Compare neighbourhood schools, language pathways, newcomer support, intensive English, special projects, childcare and the Grade 6 transition across Quebec.

Grades 1–6Public and privateQuebec-wide guidance

The elementary pathway

Six years, organized in three cycles

Each two-year cycle develops new academic independence while preparing for the transition ahead.

Cycle 1 · Grades 1–2

Learning to read and write, building number sense, following classroom routines and developing confidence as a learner.

Cycle 2 · Grades 3–4

Reading to learn, writing longer texts, multi-step mathematics and greater independence with projects and assessment.

Cycle 3 · Grades 5–6

Consolidating academic language, preparing for Grade 6 assessments and developing organization for secondary school.

Do not wait until Grade 6: Reading comprehension, written expression, multiplication/division, fractions and independent work habits should be monitored throughout elementary school.

Choose the school type

Four common elementary routes

Start with eligibility and address, then compare program design and daily fit.

French neighbourhood public

The standard route based on the home address, service-centre territory and designated basin school.

English public

For students who meet Quebec’s legal eligibility requirements, followed by board catchment rules.

Public special-project school

Alternative pedagogy, arts, nature, international education or other local projects with separate application conditions.

Private elementary

Direct institutional admission, tuition and school-specific program, support and transportation arrangements.

Language options

Understand the labels before applying

English public schooling, English as a second language and intensive English are three different things.

EN

English public school

Core subjects are taught in English. The student must normally meet Quebec’s legal eligibility rules.

ESL

English as a second language

Students in French schools study English as a subject within the Quebec curriculum.

INT

Intensive English

French elementary schools concentrate substantially more English instruction—often in Grade 5 or 6—while other subjects remain taught in French.

Intensive English is not immersion: Quebec’s ministry guidance describes roughly half a school year of concentrated English time, with other subjects taught in French. Local schedules can use five-month blocks or alternating formats.

Newcomer support

French development and subject learning must continue together.

A newcomer child may receive reception and French-learning services in different formats. Parents should ask how literacy, mathematics and integration are monitored—not only which class label is used.

Initial assessment

Language, literacy, school history and academic skills help the authority plan services.

Service model

Support may be dedicated, integrated, supplementary or a combination depending on local organization.

Reading development

Everyday conversation can improve before academic vocabulary and reading comprehension.

Transition review

Ask when the team reviews progress and what evidence guides movement toward regular instruction.

Academic checkpoints

Monitor skills—not just the report-card average

Each cycle should leave the student ready for more independent work.

READ

Reading

Accuracy, fluency, vocabulary, inference and the ability to learn from increasingly complex texts.

WRITE

Writing

Sentence control, organization, revision, spelling and the ability to explain ideas with evidence.

MATH

Mathematics

Number facts, operations, fractions, measurement, problem interpretation and clear reasoning.

WORK

Learning habits

Following instructions, organizing materials, completing work and asking for help appropriately.

Provincial assessments: Quebec publishes information documents for selected elementary ministry exams, including French in Grades 4 and 6 and mathematics in Grade 6. Confirm the current year’s schedule and weighting with the school.

Before and after school

Childcare is part of the school decision

Public elementary school childcare can support families before class, at lunch and after school, with local rules and fees.

AM

Morning care

Check opening time, breakfast policy, arrival procedure and whether registration is full.

NOON

Lunch supervision

Confirm lunch-service registration, allergies, meal arrangements and the difference between childcare and lunch supervision.

PM

After-school and pedagogical days

Ask about closing time, late pickup, homework periods, activity fees and coverage on pedagogical days or school break.

Grade 5–6 transition plan

Prepare for secondary school early

The goal is not only entrance-test performance; it is readiness for multiple teachers, faster pacing and greater independence.

Spring of Grade 5

Review reading, writing and math foundations; identify support needs before application season.

Summer before Grade 6

Maintain reading and numeracy while building a simple independent study routine.

Fall of Grade 6

Attend open houses, separate base-school registration from special/private applications and track deadlines.

Spring before Secondary 1

Practise organization, longer assignments, note-taking and asking for help in a new environment.

Frequently asked questions

Quebec elementary schools

Can I choose any public elementary school?

The home address normally identifies the designated public school. An out-of-basin request may be possible, but admission, future re-enrolment and transportation are not guaranteed.

Is intensive English the same as English school?

No. Intensive English is concentrated second-language instruction within a French elementary school. Other subjects remain taught in French. English public schooling is a separate system with legal eligibility rules.

Do all elementary schools offer childcare?

School childcare is organized locally in response to community needs and under Quebec rules. Hours, availability, registration, pedagogical-day service and fees vary by school.

Are elementary schools ranked?

Quebec’s widely cited provincewide ranking focuses on secondary schools. At elementary level, parents should emphasize catchment, literacy and math support, climate, special projects, childcare and transition quality.

When should Secondary 1 preparation begin?

Academic foundations should be monitored throughout elementary school. Formal school research often begins in Grade 5, before open houses and special/private applications during Grade 6.
