How to Choose a School in Quebec

A clear school-choice process for your child.

Move from address and language eligibility to programs, visits, applications and academic preparation—without getting lost in rankings or applying to options your child cannot attend.

Before searching school names

Know which system you are entering

The word “school” can refer to several very different admission routes in Quebec.

French public

The standard route for Quebec residents. The home address determines the service centre and designated school.

English public

Available to students who meet Quebec’s legal eligibility rules; the English board then applies catchments.

Private school

The school manages its own admission, tuition and selection, while recognized institutions follow Quebec education requirements.

CEGEP

After Secondary 5, students apply by program through a regional admission service or directly where required.

Common mistake: Living near a school does not automatically guarantee admission to it. Confirm the authority, catchment, eligibility and capacity before planning a move or paying application fees.

The complete process

Eight steps from address to decision

Follow this order so every later comparison is based on options that are genuinely available.

Confirm the address

Identify the French service centre or English school board and find the designated basin school.

Confirm language rights

If considering English public school, ask the board to assess eligibility and required documents.

Prepare the student file

Gather birth certificate, proof of residence, immigration documents, recent report cards and support plans.

Define the child profile

List strengths, support needs, language level, interests, workload tolerance and long-term goals.

Build three categories

Keep a safe local option, realistic target options and selective/stretch options.

Compare and visit

Review programs, support, commute, costs and climate; attend open houses with prepared questions.

Apply on time

Submit public registration and specialized/private applications separately; track every deadline.

Prepare the transition

Close language, math, study-skill or entrance-exam gaps before the new school year begins.

Build the student profile

Choose for the child—not the brochure

Write down the answers before comparing schools. This prevents rankings and prestige from taking over the decision.

Academic starting point

Current results by subject, learning gaps, pace, work habits and whether the student needs enrichment or consolidation.

Language profile

French and English reading, writing and oral confidence; prior language of instruction; need for welcome or francisation support.

Learning environment

Large or small school, structure, independence, classroom support, sensory needs and communication with parents.

Interests and motivation

Arts, sport, science, technology, international education or a stable regular program with room to explore.

Future pathway

Possible CEGEP direction, required Secondary 4–5 courses and whether selective programs preserve needed prerequisites.

Family capacity

Commute, fees, transportation, sibling schedules, activities and the amount of support the household can sustain.

Compare school types

Use the same questions for every option

A consistent framework makes very different schools easier to compare fairly.

For an out-of-basin public school, Quebec notes that admission and continued re-enrolment are not guaranteed. Transportation may also remain the family’s responsibility.

For newcomer families

Language support is a pathway—not a label.

Quebec schools can provide reception and French-learning support in different formats. Ask how the student is assessed, where services are delivered, how other subjects continue and how transition into regular classes is decided.

Initial assessment

Ask what French, literacy and academic information the school will review before placement.

Service model

Support may be a welcome class, integrated model or supplementary French-language assistance.

Subject continuity

Confirm how mathematics, science and other learning continue while French develops.

Transition criteria

Ask what evidence and team decision determine movement toward regular instruction.

Open-house checklist

Ask questions that reveal daily reality

A tour should help you understand teaching, support and student life—not merely admire the building.

01

Learning support

How are struggling students identified? What remediation, resource teaching and parent communication follow?

02

Program access

How many students enter the advertised program? What are the selection and continuation requirements?

03

Workload and transition

What does a normal week look like in Secondary 1? How does the school teach organization and study skills?

04

Climate and belonging

How does the school handle bullying, attendance, mental health, discipline and student integration?

Use rankings carefully

Evidence is useful when definitions are clear

Rankings can support a shortlist, but they cannot replace eligibility, program fit or a sustainable daily routine.

YEAR

Check the data year

Publication year may be later than the school year represented by the exam results.

TREND

Prefer multi-year direction

A trend provides more context than one cohort’s position or a small change in rank.

FIT

Add what rankings omit

Support, climate, language services, commute and student wellbeing are essential parts of quality.

Choose your region

Continue with local school systems

Regional guides explain authorities, schools, programs, CEGEP choices and location-specific logistics.

College HC support

Prepare the student for the chosen path

School research becomes useful when it leads to concrete academic priorities.

Greater Montreal

When location and schedule allow, students can combine in-person classes with online support.

Frequently asked questions

Choosing a school in Quebec

Can I freely choose any public school?

You can request an out-of-basin school, but acceptance depends on the applicable rules and available places. Continued attendance in later years and transportation are not automatically guaranteed.

Can a newcomer choose an English public school?

Not based on preference alone. Quebec public elementary and secondary education is normally in French, subject to legal exceptions. The English school board can help submit an eligibility application where relevant.

What documents are usually needed?

Families generally need the child’s birth certificate and proof of residence. Immigration status documents, prior report cards, custody documents or learning plans may also be required depending on the situation.

When should families begin?

Start researching in spring or summer before the final elementary year and monitor open houses and special-program applications from late summer onward. Public base-school registration often occurs later, according to the authority’s calendar.

Should we move for a school ranking?

Only after confirming the exact catchment, future boundary stability, program access and daily routine. A ranking alone does not guarantee admission or fit.
