How the system works

Four public elementary routes

The available route depends on age, address, language eligibility and the services required by the child.

K4

Kindergarten 4

Available progressively at selected schools. The child must normally be four by September 30, and places may be limited.

K5

Kindergarten 5

The regular preschool entry year. The child must normally be five by September 30 of the school year.

1–6

French elementary

The standard public route for most Quebec students, normally assigned through the French service centre and home address.

EN

English elementary

Offered through English school boards to students who qualify under the Charter of the French Language.

French and English pathways

Language of instruction changes the process

Do not confuse a child’s language ability with legal eligibility for English public education.

The elementary journey

Academic priorities change across the years

Families should compare schools while also watching the child’s development, confidence and readiness for the next cycle.

Preschool

Language, routines, social development, motor skills and a positive transition into school life.

Cycle 1—Grades 1–2

Foundational reading, writing, number sense, classroom independence and early intervention.

Cycle 2—Grades 3–4

Reading to learn, written organization, multiplication, problem solving and stronger study habits.

Cycle 3—Grades 5–6

Academic consolidation, autonomy, secondary-school research and preparation for admissions where applicable.

Choosing a school

Compare what changes daily life

A famous program is not automatically a better fit than a strong neighbourhood school with practical support.

Neighbourhood stability

Walking distance, local friendships, childcare and community continuity can meaningfully support younger children.

Language environment

Compare the language of instruction, French support, English enrichment and communication with families.

Educational project

Look for arts, science, outdoor education, international education or other projects—and their real weekly workload.

Student support

Ask about resource teachers, special education, psychoeducation, speech-language access and intervention plans.

Daycare and schedule

Confirm before- and after-school care, pedagogical days, pickup rules, meals and extracurricular timing.

Secondary transition

By Grades 5–6, compare preparation for the local public secondary school and selective-program applications.

Newcomer pathway

French support is a service—not one universal classroom model.

Quebec school organizations assess newly arrived students and may provide intensive welcome-class support, services within a regular class or supplementary francisation according to local organization and student need.

Initial family interview

The school gathers education history, language information and relevant learning or health needs.

Language assessment

French skills are assessed; mathematics or prior learning may also be reviewed to build the student profile.

SASAF / ILSS

Intensive French-learning support can be delivered in a dedicated welcome class or within regular-class integration.

SLAF support

Supplementary francisation may support students whose French development is already underway.

Programs and applications

Special projects require extra questions

Elementary programs may have different selection, continuity, costs and transportation conditions.

Practical family planning

Public does not mean every cost disappears

Instruction is publicly funded, but families should still confirm materials, childcare, meals, activities and transportation.

BUS

Transportation

Eligibility, walking distances and routes are set locally. Choosing an out-of-boundary school can affect service.

SDG

School daycare

Ask about registration, daily or occasional use, hours, pedagogical days and current fees.

MAT

Materials and activities

Confirm personal supplies, workbooks, optional outings, uniforms or program-specific costs.

MEAL

Lunch arrangements

Review supervision, cafeteria or catering availability, allergy procedures and lunch-hour rules.

Rankings and data

Elementary schools need a different comparison

Quebec does not publish a simple official elementary-school league table. Younger cohorts and limited comparable exam data make context especially important.

Use public evidence carefully

Read the school educational project, annual report, service-centre plan and available Ministry indicators.

  • Identify the source and year
  • Separate programs from outcomes
  • Consider student population and support needs

Observe the learning environment

A school visit can answer questions that a score cannot.

  • Classroom climate and routines
  • Library, playground and specialist spaces
  • Family communication and transition support

Registration checklist

Complete these steps in order

Registration periods vary locally, but Kindergarten registration commonly takes place between January and March for the following year.

Find the organization

Use the address to identify the responsible French service centre or eligible English board.

Confirm the assigned school

Check the current boundary and ask what happens if the school reaches capacity.

Prepare documents

Request the current list for identity, residence, immigration, prior school records and language eligibility.

Discuss student needs

Share language, learning, medical and support information early so the school can plan the transition.

College HC support

Build strong foundations before secondary school

Greater Montreal families can combine in-person and online learning; families elsewhere in Quebec are supported primarily online.

Elementary academic support

Structured instruction strengthens essential skills without turning every session into unfinished homework.

  • French and English literacy
  • Number sense and problem solving
  • Organization and study habits
Discuss a learning plan

Grades 5–6 transition planning

We help families turn a secondary-school goal into realistic preparation priorities.

  • Academic skills assessment
  • Entrance preparation where applicable
  • Regular progress and parent feedback

Frequently asked questions

Quebec public elementary schools

Is my child guaranteed a place at the closest public school?

Not necessarily. The responsible school organization assigns schools using its current boundaries, capacity and enrolment rules. The closest building on a map may not be the designated school.

Can I request a school outside my neighbourhood?

An out-of-boundary request may be possible, but priority usually goes to students assigned to the school. Approval can depend on capacity and may change transportation rights.

Is Kindergarten 4 available everywhere?

No. It is being expanded progressively and may be limited to selected schools. The child must normally be four by September 30, and local admission criteria can apply when demand exceeds places.

Does speaking English make my child eligible for English public school?

No. English-language ability alone is not the legal test. Families must meet Quebec eligibility rules and complete the required process through an English school board.

Will every newcomer attend a separate welcome class?

No. Quebec permits different service models. Intensive French support may occur in a dedicated class, in a regular class or through supplementary support, depending on the student and local organization.

Does College HC replace support provided by the public school?

No. School-based services and intervention plans remain the school’s responsibility. College HC provides complementary academic instruction, skill development and transition preparation.
