Montreal CEGEP guide

Choose the program first, then compare the CEGEP.

Compare English and French CEGEP pathways, prerequisites, program strengths and application steps. Build a plan that connects Secondary 4 and 5 choices to university or career goals.

Understand the pathways

Three ways to begin college studies

A DEC is Quebec’s Diploma of College Studies. Program length and purpose matter more than the general reputation of the institution.

Pre-university DEC

Usually two years. Designed to prepare students for a related university field, such as Science, Social Science, Arts or Liberal Arts.

Technical DEC

Usually three years. Builds job-ready professional skills and may include laboratories or internships. University may remain possible under specific conditions.

Transition or pathway

Often one year or flexible. Helps students explore options, strengthen preparation or complete prerequisites before entering another DEC program.

AEC is different: an Attestation of College Studies is normally a shorter, career-focused credential and is not the same as a DEC. Confirm the credential before comparing programs.

Program families

Match the field to the next destination

The same general field may have multiple profiles. Students should work backward from university prerequisites or career outcomes.

Science and mathematics

Pure and Applied Science, Health Science, Computer Science and Mathematics. Secondary V math, chemistry or physics may be required.

Health and life sciences

Pre-university science and technical programs such as nursing, diagnostic or laboratory fields have different prerequisites and career outcomes.

Social science and commerce

Profiles can include psychology, law, education, business, economics or mathematics. University requirements should guide course selection.

Technology and engineering

Computer science, civil, electronics, industrial and other technical DECs combine theory with applied projects and may lead directly to work.

Arts, media and design

Visual arts, communication, cinema, design and music may require a portfolio, audition, drawing test or statement in addition to grades.

Undecided or missing prerequisites

Transition, Springboard or Pathways options can provide exploration and prerequisite completion, but admission to a later target program is separate.

Language rules

English CEGEP access and English eligibility are not identical

Students may apply to an English-language CEGEP without having attended English secondary school. However, Quebec’s college-language rules affect admissions priority and the French courses or exit examination required for the DEC.

Admission remains program-based

Meeting the basic diploma requirement does not guarantee admission. Grades, prerequisites, capacity and additional selection still matter.

English eligibility can affect priority

A declaration of eligibility for English instruction may provide admission priority under an institution’s rules. Verify how it applies to the chosen college.

French requirements apply to English DEC programs

Quebec states that students in English DEC programs must complete three courses in French from Fall 2024, subject to exemptions, and language exit-exam rules also apply.

Ask for an individual interpretation

Eligibility, exemptions and course placement depend on the student’s official record. Confirm with the CEGEP instead of relying on informal advice.

Admission essentials

Four checks before submitting

Many Montreal public CEGEPs use SRAM, while some institutions have their own application process. Follow the instructions of the selected college.

Diploma

Confirm that the student will obtain the Quebec DES or an accepted equivalent, including required Secondary IV and V subjects.

Prerequisites

Check exact course codes for mathematics, science, chemistry and physics. A passing grade may not be competitive in a limited program.

Extra requirements

Portfolio, audition, interview, drawing test, statement, recommendation or placement testing may be required.

Application route

Verify platform, first-round deadline, fee, document status and response date. Later rounds only show programs with space remaining.

Round strategy: do not treat later rounds as extra chances for the same full list. Available programs may shrink after each round, so the first choice should balance ambition with realistic admission strength.

Student-program fit

Compare more than the admission cutoff

Published minimums indicate eligibility, not necessarily the grades of the last admitted student in a competitive year.

Academic readiness

Look at relevant subject results, consistency, workload habits and whether the student enjoys the program’s core courses.

Destination alignment

Confirm that the DEC and profile preserve prerequisites for possible university programs or deliver the intended career qualification.

Daily environment

Commute, campus size, language confidence, schedule, support centres, internships and extracurricular life can affect success.

Preparation timeline

Start in Secondary 4, not on application day

Exact dates vary by year and institution. Use this sequence to protect prerequisites and reduce last-minute decisions.

SECONDARY 4

Protect prerequisites

Connect mathematics and science course choices to possible CEGEP programs. Strengthen French, English and study habits.

SECONDARY 5 FALL

Compare programs

Attend open houses, review course grids, commute and student support, and identify portfolios, auditions or tests.

WINTER

Submit carefully

Complete the correct portal, verify documents and make a strategic first-round choice before the official deadline.

AFTER THE DECISION

Plan the transition

Respond by the deadline, complete placement steps and prepare for greater independence, course registration and workload.

College HC support

Build the academic bridge to CEGEP

Greater Montreal students can combine in-person and online learning. Students elsewhere in Quebec are primarily supported online.

Program and prerequisite review

Map the student’s university or career interests to DEC choices, Secondary IV-V prerequisites and realistic application options.

Subject preparation

Strengthen mathematics, science, French and English for Secondary 5 results and the transition to college-level work.

Application organization

Create a clear checklist for open houses, portals, documents, auditions, language requirements, responses and registration.

Frequently asked questions

Montreal CEGEP applications

Is a technical DEC only for students who do not want university?

No. A technical DEC is designed to prepare graduates for employment, but some graduates continue to university. The route and recognition vary, so students should verify university prerequisites and DEC-university bridge arrangements.

Can a student from a French secondary school apply to an English CEGEP?

Yes, students can apply, but admission capacity, academic requirements, priority rules and Quebec’s French-course and exit-exam provisions must be considered. The college should confirm the student’s individual situation.

Does meeting the minimum prerequisite guarantee admission?

No. A prerequisite makes an application eligible for review. In a competitive or limited-capacity program, the admitted grade profile may be higher, and additional selection may apply.

Should students choose the CEGEP or the program first?

Usually the program should come first. Confirm the pathway and prerequisites, then compare the colleges offering it by curriculum, support, location, language and student experience.

What is the difference between SRAM and a CEGEP’s own portal?

SRAM processes applications for many participating colleges. Some institutions use their own application system. Students must follow the instructions on the official admissions page of each selected CEGEP.
