Four rules to know

Public school choice has more than one layer

A school may be nearby without being the designated neighbourhood school, and a special program may use rules different from its regular stream.

Neighbourhood school

The home address normally determines the designated regular school. Students living in the territory often receive priority when space is limited.

Open choice

A family may request another school, but transportation and placement are not automatically guaranteed and depend on board rules and capacity.

Special program

PEI, enriched, arts, science and sport pathways may require a separate application, minimum results, an assessment or selection activity.

English eligibility

Access to publicly funded English elementary and secondary education is governed by Quebec language law and requires verification.

Do not rely on distance alone: use the official school locator for your address, then contact the school or service centre to confirm territory, available places, transportation and program-specific rules.

Programs, names and admission procedures can change. Confirm every option with the school and its service centre or board for the intended entry year.

Program types

Choose the learning model before the label

Two programs with similar names can use different schedules, selection standards and student supports.

PEI / IB Middle Years

Inquiry, international-mindedness, interdisciplinary learning and a personal project. Ask how language enrichment and workload are organized.

Academic enrichment

Accelerated or enriched work in mathematics, science, languages or several subjects. Review entry and continuation standards.

Sport concentration

Balances academics with increased training or physical activity. Distinguish school concentrations from recognized Sport-etudes programs.

Arts and music

May include visual arts, performance, media, music or dance. Auditions, portfolios and extra costs can apply.

Science, STEAM and robotics

Builds learning around experimentation, technology and projects. Compare facilities, course time and extracurricular expectations.

Regular pathway

Can still provide strong teaching, options and support without selective admission. A good local fit may offer more balance and participation.

English public schools

Check eligibility before comparing programs

Quebec generally provides public elementary and secondary education in French. A child must fall within an exception under the Charter of the French Language to receive publicly funded English instruction.

Do not self-diagnose eligibility

Family history, Canadian citizenship, previous schooling and temporary situations can matter. Ask the receiving English school board to review the case.

Prepare supporting documents

The board may request birth certificates, citizenship or immigration documents, parents’ school records and proof of residence.

Eligibility and admission are separate

A certificate can establish access to English instruction, but it does not guarantee a place at a particular school or selective program.

Start early

Incomplete applications take longer. Contact the board before the registration deadline if documents or family schooling history are complex.

Application timeline

Plan the year before Secondary 1

Dates below are a planning pattern, not universal deadlines. Follow the official calendar of every school and program.

SPRING

Map the options

Confirm the designated school, language pathway and realistic commute. List regular and special-program possibilities.

SEPTEMBER

Attend open houses

Compare school climate, program structure, support and transportation. Ask for the current admission procedure.

SEPTEMBER-OCTOBER

Apply to programs

Submit reports, forms and assessments by each program’s deadline. Keep proof of submission and a backup route.

REGISTRATION PERIOD

Secure the pathway

Complete neighbourhood or board registration even when a selective-program decision is still pending, as instructed locally.

A stronger decision

Compare the full student experience

A selective title is useful only when the program, workload and daily routine match the child.

Access and logistics

Territory priority, transportation, travel time, before- and after-school care, and extracurricular schedules.

Academic and language fit

Current French or English level, independent work, pace, support services and the student’s genuine interest in the program.

Backup quality

A neighbourhood regular program can be an excellent pathway. Build alternatives the family would truly accept, not emergency choices.

About rankings: school results can provide context, but public-school populations, admission models and programs differ. Never interpret one score without checking methodology, source year and student fit.

College HC support

From school search to program readiness

Greater Montreal families can combine in-person and online support. Families outside the region are primarily supported online.

Choice-map consultation

Organize the address-based school, open-choice possibilities, special programs and a realistic backup plan.

Academic preparation

Strengthen French, English, mathematics, reasoning and learning habits according to the child’s grade and target program.

Application organization

Build a calendar for open houses, forms, reports, eligibility documents, assessments, responses and registration.

Frequently asked questions

Montreal public-school applications

Can I choose any public school in Montreal?

You can sometimes request a school outside the designated territory, but acceptance depends on local rules and available space. Neighbourhood students may have priority, and transportation may remain the family’s responsibility.

Does a PEI or enriched program always require an exam?

No. One school may use report cards only, another may add an admission activity, and another may have a different assessment. Check the current published criteria for the exact program.

Is an English eligibility certificate the same as school admission?

No. Eligibility establishes the right to receive publicly funded English instruction. The board and school still apply territory, capacity, registration and program-selection rules.

Should we register at the neighbourhood school while waiting for a special program?

Often that is the safer route, but the correct procedure depends on the service centre or board. Follow its instructions so the child does not lose a regular placement while waiting.

How can College HC help with public-school programs?

College HC can help families organize choices and deadlines and strengthen the student’s French, English, mathematics and general academic readiness. It cannot guarantee admission or replace official eligibility decisions.
