Gatineau School Guide
Choose a school path on the Quebec side of the Ottawa River.
Compare elementary schools, secondary schools, private options and CEGEP pathways across Hull, Aylmer, Plateau, central Gatineau, Buckingham and nearby Outaouais communities.
Explore by sector
Where you live determines the first shortlist
School authority, catchment, transportation and commute can change from one Gatineau sector to another.
Hull & central west
Urban access, CSSPO schools, English pathways through Hadley/Philemon Wright and proximity to both local CEGEPs.
Aylmer
Family-oriented neighbourhoods, CSSPO schools and the Symmes–D’Arcy McGee English secondary pathway.
Plateau & newer west
Rapid growth, newer schools, changing boundaries and daily connections toward Hull and Ottawa.
Gatineau East & Buckingham
Primarily CSS des Draveurs territory, with multiple secondary schools, concentrations and longer cross-city travel.
Understand the networks
Three public-school routes
Language eligibility and home address narrow the realistic options before any program comparison begins.

French public schools serving Hull, Aylmer, Plateau and other western Outaouais sectors.
- Neighbourhood schools by address
- Secondary schools include Mont‑Bleu, Grande‑Rivière and de l’Île

CSS des Draveurs
French public schools concentrated in the Gatineau sector and nearby municipalities.
- Secondary schools offer varied concentrations
- PEI and enriched routes may use selection
- Deadlines differ by school and program
Western Québec School Board
English public schooling for eligible students across Outaouais and a large regional territory.
- Confirm English eligibility
- Use the official school locator
- Grade 7–8 and 9–11 may be separate schools

Program fit
What should families compare?
Different labels can hide very different workloads, selection methods and student experiences.
PEI / international education
Compare selection, project workload, language expectations, community service and the student’s readiness for sustained independent work.
Sport and athletics
Verify training time, recognized-sport requirements, competition travel, fees and how missed class time is supported.
Arts and multimedia
Ask about auditions, portfolios, production time and whether the pathway develops technique, creativity or both.
Science and technology
Look at actual course choices, labs, projects and the Secondary 4–5 prerequisites needed for future CEGEP study.
French-language development
Newcomer families should discuss welcome classes, francisation, assessment and transition into regular classes.
Regular program with support
A nearby school with effective resource support and a manageable routine may be a stronger fit than a selective program.
A border-city reality
Quebec address, Ottawa routine.
Many parents work in Ottawa, but the child’s school path is still shaped by Quebec residence, language law, the Quebec curriculum and local transportation. Treat cross-river convenience as a logistics question—not an automatic school entitlement.
Bridge-time test
Test the route during the actual school and work rush, including winter and construction delays.
OC Transpo and STO
Adult commuting may be easy while the child’s school route follows a different bus network and timetable.
Quebec prerequisites
Plan Secondary 4–5 math and science courses around Quebec CEGEP admissions, even when university may later be in Ontario.
After-school reality
Include clubs, sports, sibling pickup and the adult’s cross-river return time in the final decision.
For newcomer families
Use this order before applying
A disciplined sequence prevents wasted applications and protects the student’s language and prerequisite pathway.
Confirm the authority
Enter the exact address and identify CSSPO, CSS des Draveurs or the eligible English-board catchment.
Confirm language eligibility
English public schooling has legal eligibility rules; English CEGEP admission follows different rules.
Request language assessment
Ask about classe d’accueil, francisation and transition support if the student is new to French instruction.
Map future courses
Protect the math, science and language prerequisites needed for the intended CEGEP program.

Frequently asked questions
Gatineau school planning
Which French school service centre covers Gatineau?
It depends on the sector and exact address. Western sectors such as Hull and Aylmer are generally associated with CSSPO, while much of the Gatineau sector is served by CSS des Draveurs. Always verify with the official address tool.
Can my child attend an English public school?
The student must meet Quebec eligibility rules for English-language public education. If eligible, Western Québec School Board uses catchments and designated schools.
Does English CEGEP require an English eligibility certificate?
CÉGEP Heritage College states that admission is open to applicants whether or not they have been declared eligible for English instruction, although current Law 14 curriculum and graduation requirements still apply. Confirm the latest rules with the college.
Can a Gatineau resident simply attend an Ottawa public school?
Not automatically. Ontario boards have their own residency and fee rules. Families living in Quebec should plan primarily around Quebec school rights and verify any Ontario possibility directly with the relevant board.
Does College HC offer in-person classes in Gatineau?
College HC’s regular in-person service is in Greater Montreal. Gatineau students are primarily supported through live online tutoring, small groups, assessments and parent feedback.
