Quebec Math Pathways Guide

Choose CST, TS or SN from the destination backward.

Compare Quebec’s Secondary 4–5 mathematics options, understand switching risks and verify the prerequisites required by the student’s intended CEGEP program.

Secondary 4–5CEGEP prerequisite planningFit before prestige

First principle

Three official options—not a simple ranking

CST, TS and SN emphasize different mathematical contexts and forms of reasoning within Quebec’s Secondary Cycle Two program.

CST

Cultural, Social and Technical

Connects mathematics with social, cultural, economic and everyday decision contexts. It can support many postsecondary routes, depending on prerequisites.

TS

Technical and Scientific

Emphasizes mathematical modelling and technical or scientific applications, often connecting concepts with practical processes.

SN

Science

Places greater emphasis on formal scientific reasoning, abstract structures and mathematical properties used in science-oriented study.

No universal “best” option: course fit depends on interests, aptitude, performance, school offering and the exact requirements of future programs.

Side-by-side framework

Compare the learning experience

This table describes broad emphasis. Use the official program and the student’s school for precise content and placement rules.

The choice timeline

Preparation begins before Secondary 4

Students usually need direction by the end of Secondary 3, when schools organize the next year’s mathematics placement.

Secondary 2

Strengthen fractions, proportional reasoning, algebraic language, geometry and accurate written work.

Early Secondary 3

Observe problem-solving habits, persistence, reading of mathematical situations and independence.

Course-selection period

Compare target prerequisites with school criteria, teacher evidence and the student’s interests.

Before Secondary 4

Repair specific gaps and preview essential vocabulary or concepts without attempting to rush the entire course.

Decision process

Use evidence from four directions.

A single test mark cannot capture readiness. Combine future requirements with recent performance, learning behaviour and a realistic view of workload.

Destination evidence

List two or three possible CEGEP programs and their current mathematics prerequisites.

Performance evidence

Review competencies, tests, assignments and error patterns—not only the overall average.

Teacher evidence

Ask what the student does independently and which gaps could become barriers next year.

Student evidence

Consider interest, stress, study time, willingness to practise and response to abstract problems.

Prerequisite planning

Read the exact wording

Do not rely on labels such as “science math.” Requirements may identify a specific Secondary 4 or 5 option or accepted equivalent.

Program page

Open the current admission page for each target DEC, not an old brochure or discussion forum.

Level and option

Record whether the requirement is Secondary 4 or 5 and which of CST, TS or SN is accepted.

Science package

Check related science, chemistry or physics prerequisites separately; mathematics alone may not be enough.

Minimum performance

Passing a prerequisite may not guarantee admission to a limited-enrolment program.

Create a prerequisite map: one row per target program, with the official link, required course, minimum stated result and the date verified.

Switching options

A change may require catch-up

The Quebec program allows certain changes, but timing, local rules and missing instructional content matter.

CST→

Moving toward SN

The official program notes that moving from CST to the Science option may require a compensatory measure determined by the school.

S4→S5

Changing after Secondary 4

Changes are possible only in specific cases. Ask the school which concepts, instructional hours or placement conditions must be addressed.

UP

Later upgrading

Adult education, college pathways or other recognized routes may help complete missing prerequisites, but time and availability vary.

Never plan on an automatic switch: obtain a written explanation of eligibility, catch-up work, schedule impact and whether the target course will actually be offered.

Secondary 4 exam

All three options have a ministerial examination

The current official information document covers CST, TS and SN examinations and identifies the competency and processes evaluated.

C2

Mathematical reasoning

The Secondary 4 examinations focus on the competency “Uses mathematical reasoning” within the concepts and processes of each option.

50%

Final-result weighting

For the applicable year, Secondary 4 ministerial examination weighting is 50% of the final result for the competency evaluated.

3X

Exam sessions

The Ministère prepares January, June and August sessions. Always check the current schedule and school instructions.

Readiness check

Look for foundations under the grade

A student can have a reasonable average while relying on fragile procedures or heavy prompting.

Algebra

  • Manipulates expressions accurately
  • Solves equations with clear steps
  • Connects symbols to situations

Functions and relations

  • Reads tables, graphs and rules
  • Explains rates of change
  • Moves between representations

Geometry

  • Uses properties and measurements
  • Justifies relationships
  • Interprets diagrams carefully

Problem solving

  • Selects relevant information
  • Plans before calculating
  • Checks whether results make sense

Communication

  • Uses correct notation
  • Shows reasoning completely
  • Explains conclusions precisely

Work habits

  • Practises consistently
  • Corrects errors independently
  • Asks specific questions

Common decision mistakes

Avoid status-based mathematics choices

The goal is a pathway that supports both achievement and later access.

“SN is always better.”

SN is useful when it matches prerequisites and readiness. It is not a universal measure of intelligence or ambition.

“CST closes every door.”

CST supports many pathways. The real question is whether a specific target requires another option.

“A high average means ready.”

Review task complexity, independence, error patterns and the difference between competencies.

“We can switch later.”

A switch may involve missing instructional time, compensatory work, scheduling and school approval.

“Choose what friends choose.”

Peers may have different goals, foundations and tolerance for workload.

“Tutoring can carry the course.”

Support can repair gaps, but the student still needs a sustainable level of independent learning.

Preparation roadmap

Strengthen the right skills in the right order

A focused plan begins with diagnosis and ends with independent reasoning.

Diagnose

Identify whether difficulties come from concepts, language, arithmetic accuracy, reasoning or organization.

Repair

Rebuild the earliest missing prerequisite before adding more advanced procedures.

Connect

Practise moving among equations, graphs, tables, diagrams and written situations.

Perform

Complete mixed and timed problems, explain decisions and analyze every recurring error.

Frequently asked questions

CST, TS and SN questions

Is SN automatically better than TS or CST?

No. The options have different orientations. The best choice is the one that matches future prerequisites, current readiness and a sustainable workload.

Can CST students attend CEGEP?

Yes. CST meets the mathematics requirement for many programs. Students must verify whether their specific target DEC requires TS, SN or another named prerequisite.

Can a student switch from CST to SN?

The Quebec program allows switches only in certain cases and notes that CST-to-Science movement may require a compensatory measure determined by the school. Confirm local criteria and scheduling.

Do CST, TS and SN write the same Secondary 4 exam?

Each option has its corresponding Secondary 4 ministerial examination based on that option’s concepts and processes. The official information document covers the three course codes.

When should families decide?

Begin exploring during Secondary 3 and confirm the choice during the school’s course-selection process. Target-program research and skill assessment should happen before the form is due.
