Nine regional pathways to investigate
Each card identifies the principal education hubs and the planning issue most likely to shape a family’s shortlist.
Bas-Saint-Laurent
Rimouski, Rivière-du-Loup, Matane and La Pocatière offer several school networks and CEGEP choices along a long river-and-inland corridor.
Gaspésie & Îles-de-la-Madeleine
Gaspé, Bonaventure, Carleton-sur-Mer and the Islands require close attention to distance, campus location and program availability.
Côte-Nord
Baie-Comeau, Sept-Îles and smaller coastal communities combine large territories with two principal regional CEGEPs.
Abitibi-Témiscamingue
Rouyn-Noranda, Val-d’Or, Amos and La Sarre connect through regional school centres and a multi-campus CEGEP network.
Nord-du-Québec
Baie-James, Eeyou Istchee, Nunavik and nearby northern communities have distinct governance, language and travel realities.
Chaudière-Appalaches
Lévis, Beauce, Thetford Mines and Montmagny offer several French public networks and three major CEGEP choices.
Centre-du-Québec
Drummondville, Victoriaville and Nicolet-area families compare urban and regional schools plus two public CEGEPs.
Lanaudière
Joliette, L’Assomption and Terrebonne link fast-growing communities to three constituent colleges within one regional CEGEP.
Laurentides
Saint-Jérôme, Sainte-Thérèse, Lachute and northern municipalities require careful catchment and commuter planning.
Regional comparison
Start with the nearest education hub
This table is an orientation tool. Confirm the exact service centre, designated school and current program using the residential address.
| Region | Main hubs | French public planning | College pathway | Watch closely |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bas-Saint-Laurent | Rimouski, Rivière-du-Loup, Matane, La Pocatière | Multiple service centres including des Phares, Kamouraska–Rivière-du-Loup, Monts-et-Marées and Fleuve-et-des-Lacs | Cégeps in Rimouski, Rivière-du-Loup, Matane and La Pocatière | Distance between programs and campuses |
| Gaspésie–Îles | Gaspé, Bonaventure, Carleton-sur-Mer, Îles-de-la-Madeleine | Chic-Chocs, René-Lévesque and des Îles territories | Cégep de la Gaspésie et des Îles operates across several campuses | The program may not be offered at every campus |
| Côte-Nord | Baie-Comeau, Sept-Îles | Estuaire, Fer, Moyenne-Côte-Nord and Littoral territories | Cégep de Baie-Comeau and Cégep de Sept-Îles | Remote-community travel and housing |
| Abitibi-Témiscamingue | Rouyn-Noranda, Val-d’Or, Amos, La Sarre | Several regional service centres; address determines the local network | Cégep de l’Abitibi-Témiscamingue has multiple teaching locations | Campus-specific program delivery |
| Nord-du-Québec | Chibougamau, Eeyou Istchee, Nunavik | French, English and Indigenous-governed systems differ by community | No regular CEGEP is listed by Quebec for the region | Relocation, distance study and culturally appropriate pathways |
| Chaudière-Appalaches | Lévis, Saint-Georges, Thetford Mines, Montmagny | Navigateurs, Beauce-Etchemin, Appalaches and Côte-du-Sud territories | Cégep de Lévis, Cégep Beauce-Appalaches and Cégep de Thetford | Suburban versus regional transport |
| Centre-du-Québec | Drummondville, Victoriaville, Nicolet | Chênes, Bois-Francs and Riveraine territories | Cégep de Drummondville and Cégep de Victoriaville | Specialized programs may draw from a wide radius |
| Lanaudière | Joliette, L’Assomption, Terrebonne | Samares and Affluents are major French public networks | Cégep régional de Lanaudière’s three constituent colleges | Rapid growth, capacity and commuter time |
| Laurentides | Saint-Jérôme, Sainte-Thérèse, Lachute | Rivière-du-Nord, Mille-Îles, Laurentides and Seigneurie-des-Mille-Îles areas | Cégep de Saint-Jérôme and Collège Lionel-Groulx | Large north–south differences in access |
Institution names and territories can evolve. Always verify the current designated school, campus, program and transportation directly with the responsible organization.
A different comparison model
Regional fit matters more than a generic rank
Smaller cohorts, specialized admissions and long travel distances make one-number comparisons especially unreliable outside major cities.
Program availability
Confirm that the program exists at the exact school or CEGEP campus for the intended year.
Travel and housing
Test daily transportation and whether college study may require residence or relocation.
Student support
Ask about francisation, resource teaching, adapted services and access to specialized professionals.
Course prerequisites
Protect Secondary IV–V math and science options required for the intended college program.
Language pathways
French is the default public-school route.
English public education is available only under Quebec’s eligibility rules. English boards may cover very large territories, and the nearest English school may still be far from home.
Confirm eligibility first
Contact the English school board to start the certificate-of-eligibility process before comparing specific schools.
Find the responsible board
Eastern Shores, Western Québec, Central Québec and Sir Wilfrid Laurier serve different regional territories.
Do not assume transportation
A student may be eligible for English education without receiving the preferred route or practical bus service.
Distinguish CEGEP rules
English elementary/secondary eligibility and admission to an English CEGEP are related but not identical processes.
For newcomer families
Follow this sequence before choosing a school
The process reduces false comparisons and identifies language or transition support early.
Confirm the address
Identify the municipality, French service centre, designated school and available transportation.
Request language assessment
Ask about welcome classes, francisation and how students transition into regular French instruction.
Compare realistic programs
Check eligibility, selection, deadlines, fees and transport for each particular program.
Plan the next level
Connect secondary course choices to local CEGEP programs—or to relocation and distance options.
CEGEP planning
The province-wide list is only the beginning
Regional CEGEPs often have distinctive technical strengths, but program availability may depend on the campus and intake.
Study close to home
Compare the exact local program, prerequisites, residence, transportation and student support—not only the institution name.
Relocate for a program
Budget for housing, food, travel home and the student’s readiness for greater independence.
Use distance options
Cégep à distance may support selected general-education or pathway needs, but it does not replace every laboratory, clinical or technical program.
How to use school data
Every result needs context and a year
Use public data to ask better questions, not to promise that one school will produce the same result for every child.
| Indicator | Useful question | Main limitation | Verification source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Graduation and qualification | How have cohorts progressed over several years? | Small cohorts can change percentages sharply | Quebec open data and annual reports |
| Ministerial exams | How did students perform in selected tested subjects? | Does not measure all learning or wellbeing | Ministère data with source year |
| Special programs | Does the program match the student’s strengths? | Offerings can change and admission is not guaranteed | Current school and service-centre pages |
| Student services | What support structure is published? | Availability for one child requires confirmation | Educational project and direct inquiry |
| College prerequisites | Which Secondary IV–V courses protect the target route? | Requirements differ by program and intake | Official program and admissions pages |

Frequently asked questions
Planning outside Quebec’s major cities
How do I find the public school assigned to my address?
First identify the French service centre responsible for the municipality, then use its current school-territory tool or contact its admissions office. Do not rely only on the nearest school shown on a general map.
Can my child attend an English public school?
The child must normally qualify under Quebec’s English-language education rules. Contact the responsible English school board, which can explain the certificate process, designated school and transportation.
Are regional schools ranked fairly against large-city schools?
Not through one simple score. Cohort size, selection, local mandate and available programs affect results. Compare dated indicators and explain these limitations.
Does every regional CEGEP campus offer every program?
No. Multi-campus institutions may offer a program only at a particular location or intake. Verify the exact campus, prerequisites and current availability before applying.
What if the desired CEGEP program is far from home?
Compare residence, rental costs, transportation, maturity and alternate local programs. Distance learning can help in some situations but cannot replace every technical or laboratory program.
Does College HC teach in person throughout Quebec?
College HC’s regular in-person service is in Greater Montreal. Students elsewhere in Quebec are primarily supported through live online small groups or one-to-one tutoring.
