Quebec CEGEP Admission Guide
Choose the program first—then choose the college.
Compare pre-university and technical DEC programs, understand prerequisites and application routes, plan deadlines and prepare for the academic transition from Secondary 5.
College pathways
DEC and AEC are not interchangeable
Start from the student’s destination, eligibility and prior education.
Pre-university DEC
Usually four terms over two years. It combines general education and program-specific courses and prepares students for university.
Technical DEC
Usually three years of full-time study. It prepares students for employment and can also lead to university when requirements are met.
Attestation of College Studies
A shorter technical credential generally aimed at adult or continuing-education profiles under specific admission conditions.
How CEGEP works
A faster academic rhythm with more independence
College is Quebec’s first non-compulsory education level and sits between secondary school and university.
Two main terms
Fall generally runs from August to December and winter from January to May, with examination periods included.
General education
DEC programs include language of instruction and literature, philosophy or humanities, second language, physical education and complementary learning.
Program courses
Discipline-specific courses build university preparation or technical competence, depending on the DEC.
Student responsibility
Students manage registration, deadlines, attendance, course work and requests for support more independently.
Program comparison
Match the route to the destination
Use current institutional program pages because course grids and admission conditions can change.
| Pathway | Primary purpose | Typical structure | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pre-university DEC | Preparation for university study | Usually 2 years / 4 terms | University prerequisites, profile options and workload |
| Technical DEC | Employment preparation; university may remain possible | Usually 3 years with at least one workplace practicum | Accreditation, placements, job context and university bridges |
| Double DEC | Combined pre-university disciplines | Longer and more intensive than a standard pre-university route | Exact duration, course sequence and workload |
| Springboard to DEC | Orientation, prerequisites or transition before program choice | Common, prerequisite and orientation courses | Maximum duration and pathway into the target program |
| AEC | Short-term technical employment preparation | Varies by college and current offering | Eligibility, recognition, schedule and employer relevance |
General DEC admission
A diploma may be necessary—but not sufficient.
Admission to a DEC generally begins with the required secondary credential or an accepted alternative. A program can then add specific mathematics, science, portfolio, audition or other requirements.
Secondary School Diploma
The standard route is a Quebec SSD or instruction the college judges equivalent.
Vocational route
A DVS can provide access when required Secondary 5 languages and Secondary 4 mathematics are passed.
Conditional possibility
Quebec describes limited situations where six credits or fewer remain, subject to college conditions.
Program prerequisites
Specific DEC programs may require additional Secondary 4 or 5 mathematics and sciences.
Application route
Send the application to the right place
The correct portal depends on the college, region and credential.
Metropolitan Montreal
Many public CEGEP applications in Greater Montreal and participating areas go through SRAM.
Quebec admission service
Participating CEGEPs in the applicable regions use SRACQ’s process and rounds.
Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean
Participating colleges in that regional network use SRASL.
Direct application
Quebec identifies some CEGEPs that receive applications directly; private colleges and AEC programs also direct applicants to the institution.
Core deadlines
March 1 and November 1 anchor the calendar
These are Quebec’s stated CEGEP application deadlines, but admission rounds and institutional requirements still need confirmation.
Fall admission
Submit the application before March 1 for the fall term, then follow the regional service or college’s round process.
Winter admission
Submit before November 1 for the winter term. Program availability can be more limited than in fall.
Additional requirements
Portfolios, auditions, interviews, language evidence or international-study authorizations may have separate timelines.
Application strategy
Work backward from the target program
A strong plan combines ambition, evidence and a realistic alternative.
Define the destination
Compare university fields, occupations and technical careers before selecting a college program.
Confirm prerequisites
List required secondary courses and check whether the student is currently enrolled in all of them.
Compare colleges
Evaluate program structure, commute, language, support, campus environment and current admission route.
Build alternatives
Select realistic second choices and understand later rounds, Springboard or prerequisite-upgrading options.
How to compare CEGEPs
Program delivery matters more than campus popularity
Ask the same questions at every college so marketing language does not drive the decision.

The R score
It begins after admission—not before
The R score measures CEGEP academic performance in the context of different courses, professors and groups.
What it is
A contextual measure of college academic performance used by universities when analyzing applications.
Why it matters
Universities may use it for limited-enrolment programs or as a minimum admission threshold.
What it should not do
Fear of the R score should not replace choosing a suitable program, sustainable workload and strong study habits.
Public and private college costs
Verify status before estimating the budget
Cost depends on residency, study load, institution type, program and student status.
Public full-time study
Quebec states that full-time students receive free tuition, subject to residency/status rules and associated fees.
Private colleges
Tuition and teaching-service fees may apply and vary by institution.
Associated costs
Application, registration, student services, association, books, devices, transportation and housing may apply.
Financial assistance
Eligible Quebec students with insufficient resources may have access to loans and bursaries.
Secondary 5 readiness
Prepare for a 16-week term
The transition is not only academic; students must manage time and seek help earlier.
College-level literacy
Read longer texts, take useful notes, synthesize sources and write structured responses.
Prerequisite fluency
Strengthen required mathematics and science foundations before the first term begins.
Independent planning
Use gaps between classes for study, track every syllabus and begin assignments before reminders.

Frequently asked questions
Quebec CEGEP admission questions
What is the difference between a pre-university and technical DEC?
A pre-university DEC generally takes two years and prepares students for university. A technical DEC generally takes three years, prepares for employment and may also provide university access when the relevant requirements are met.
What are the main CEGEP application deadlines?
Quebec lists March 1 for fall admission and November 1 for winter admission. Confirm the portal, round rules and any additional program requirements.
Can a student apply without every prerequisite completed?
Admission conditions depend on the program, current enrolment, final diploma status and college rules. Confirm directly rather than assuming a prerequisite can be completed later.
Is CEGEP tuition always free?
Quebec states that full-time students receive free tuition in the applicable public context, but residency and legal status matter and associated fees remain. Private-college tuition may apply.
Does a technical DEC prevent university study?
No. Technical training can provide university access, but the student must meet the chosen university program’s admission requirements and prerequisites.
