Quebec Ministerial Exam Guide

Understand the exam before building the study plan.

Learn which grades write ministerial examinations, how results are weighted, where to find official documents, what happens after results and how to prepare without last-minute cramming.

Elementary & secondaryOfficial weighting explainedQuebec-wide support

The two main categories

20% and 50% do not apply to the same exams

The percentages apply to the competency or competencies evaluated—not automatically to the entire report card in the same way for every subject.

20%

Elementary and Secondary 2

Quebec states that these ministerial examinations count for 20% of the final result for the competency or competencies evaluated.

50%

Secondary 4 and 5

The moderated school mark and ministerial examination each count for 50% of the final result for the competency or competencies evaluated.

60%

Course passing line

For Secondary 4 and 5 certification, a final result of 60% or higher is required to pass the course and earn its credits.

Do not calculate from the visible report card alone: official processes such as moderation, conversion and competency weighting can affect the final result recorded by the Ministère.

Elementary checkpoints

Prepare skills, not memorized answers

The Ministère publishes current information documents for selected elementary examinations.

Grade 4 language of instruction

For the applicable French-language pathway, consult the current reading and writing information documents and school schedule.

Grade 6 language of instruction

Students may complete multi-part language tasks requiring sustained reading, writing and careful instruction-following.

Grade 6 mathematics

Preparation should cover application situations, problem solving, concepts, procedures and communicating reasoning.

School-specific administration

Confirm language sector, dates, authorized materials, accommodations and which components apply to the student.

Secondary checkpoints

Know the subject and the evaluated competency

The exact examination differs by language sector, program and mathematics or science option.

Final-result mechanics

School mark, exam mark and final result are different.

At Secondary 4 and 5, the Ministère uses official processes designed to make results comparable. Families should wait for the official achievement record before drawing conclusions from informal calculations.

School mark

Represents school-based evaluation and may be moderated for the applicable ministerial result.

Exam mark

The result on the ministerial examination; a conversion may increase cohort results when officially justified.

Final result

The official result used to determine course success and credits after applicable calculations.

Achievement record

The Ministère record shows official results and progress toward secondary-school certification.

Official exam calendar

January, June and August serve different needs

Always consult the current schedule; dates and multi-part windows can change from year to year.

JAN

Winter session

Includes scheduled examinations and retakes. Some language tasks or preparation activities may begin before the main written date.

JUN

Main session

The largest examination period. Avoid travel and commitments until every official subject date is confirmed.

AUG

Retake session

Students needing another attempt should contact their educational organization quickly after results are available.

One exam may span several dates: oral interaction, preparation, reading, listening and writing components can have separate administration windows.

Eight-week preparation model

Move from diagnosis to exam conditions

Adjust the schedule to the student, subject and official format. More hours are not always better; focused repetition is.

Weeks 8–7: Diagnose

Use recent work and a representative task to identify concept, language, reasoning and timing gaps.

Weeks 6–5: Rebuild

Teach missing concepts explicitly and practise one skill at a time with immediate feedback.

Weeks 4–3: Integrate

Combine skills in longer tasks and practise selecting strategies without step-by-step prompting.

Weeks 2–1: Simulate

Use timed sections, authorized materials and realistic breaks; then correct errors by category.

Subject strategy

Different exams require different practice

A generic study plan misses the competencies that actually determine performance.

Language

Read complex texts, plan writing, support ideas with evidence, revise under time limits and practise applicable oral tasks.

Mathematics

Strengthen concepts and procedures, interpret wording, show reasoning and check whether an answer fits the situation.

Science

Connect theory, technical vocabulary, diagrams, applications and multi-step explanations.

History

Organize chronology, analyze documents, connect causes and consequences and write precise evidence-based responses.

Exam-week checklist

Remove avoidable uncertainty

Use the school’s instructions as the final authority.

48H

Two days before

  • Confirm date, time and room
  • Prepare authorized materials
  • Finish heavy studying early
AM

Exam morning

  • Arrive according to school instructions
  • Bring required identification/materials
  • Leave personal devices away
TEST

During the exam

  • Read every instruction
  • Budget time by section
  • Reserve time to verify work

After results

Follow the official sequence

A disappointing result needs quick, accurate action—not assumptions based on one number.

Check the official record

Review the Online Academic Record and achievement record when results are released.

Separate the marks

Identify the ministerial exam mark, school mark and final course result.

Contact the school

Ask about credit impact, retake registration, course completion and time-sensitive options.

Choose the remedy

Depending on the case, consider a retake, eligible exam-mark review or school-mark review.

A review can move either direction: Quebec states that reviewing a Secondary 4 or 5 ministerial examination mark may maintain, increase or decrease the result.

Avoid common mistakes

Preparation myths that waste time

Strong preparation is aligned, cumulative and honest about the starting point.

“Do more worksheets.”

Quantity does not repair a misunderstood concept or weak reading of instructions.

“Memorize the old exam.”

Formats and prompts change. Practise transferable competencies using authorized public materials.

“Start after the third report.”

Cumulative reading, writing and mathematics gaps need more than a few rushed weeks.

“The exam is the whole course mark.”

Weighting applies to evaluated competencies within the official result calculation.

“A failed exam always means a failed course.”

Check the official final result and credit status before deciding the next step.

“Accommodations happen automatically.”

Confirm approved measures, materials and administration with the school well in advance.
