Sherbrooke & Eastern Townships School Guide
Choose a school path in Quebec’s bilingual university region.
Compare French and English public schools, private and boarding options, specialized secondary programs and CEGEP pathways across Sherbrooke, Lennoxville, Magog, Bromont, Cowansville and the Eastern Townships.
Explore by area
Start with the student’s real weekly radius
Urban Sherbrooke, Lennoxville and the wider Townships offer very different language, transport and campus experiences.
Central & West Sherbrooke
French public secondary schools, private options, Université de Sherbrooke and Cégep de Sherbrooke within the city network.
Lennoxville
An English education cluster linking public schools, Champlain College, Bishop’s University and Bishop’s College School.
Magog, North Hatley & Memphrémagog
Smaller communities where catchments, school buses and language eligibility strongly shape the shortlist.
Bromont, Cowansville & border towns
Longer regional routes with French and English choices, plus independent boarding schools such as Stanstead College.
Understand the system
Four routes families commonly compare
Public eligibility and catchments work differently from private day-school or boarding admission.
French public—Sherbrooke
Four principal public secondary environments offer distinct vocations.
- Local school based on address
- Regional vocations may be open across CSSRS
- Admissions activities and fees can apply
English public
Eastern Townships School Board serves eligible students across a large rural and urban territory.
- Confirm English eligibility first
- Use the designated catchment school
- Bus time can be substantial
Quebec private day schools
French private schools operate within Quebec’s secondary system but use their own admissions.
- Compare tuition and transportation
- Ask about selection and support
- Review the actual educational project
Independent boarding
English-language boarding schools may follow distinctive Grade 7–12 and university-preparatory models.
- Residential fit matters as much as academics
- Fees differ greatly from subsidized private schools
- Clarify diploma and university pathway

Compare program fit
What should families examine?
The best match balances program intensity, language, student support, future prerequisites and independence.
PEI / international education
Compare project load, language demands, selection and the student’s readiness for sustained independent work.
Sport‑études
Verify athlete status, training partner, travel, fees and how the compressed academic schedule is supported.
Arts and performance
Ask about auditions, rehearsal hours, production expectations and whether intensive specialization suits the child.
Science pathway
Protect Secondary 4–5 math, chemistry and physics options needed for the intended CEGEP program.
French-English pathway
Separate English public eligibility from the student’s bilingual goals and the language of daily assessment.
Boarding readiness
Evaluate independence, residence supervision, weekend life, student wellbeing and family communication—not only academics.
The regional-life test
A short distance can mean a long school day.
Outside central Sherbrooke, transport frequency, winter roads and extracurricular pickup can determine whether a program remains sustainable.
STS city transit
Useful inside Sherbrooke, but route frequency and transfers should be tested at actual school hours.
Regional school buses
English public catchments may cover large territories; ask about total door-to-door time.
Boarding versus commuting
Residential school changes cost, independence and family rhythm; it is not simply a transport solution.
University ecosystem
Université de Sherbrooke and Bishop’s University contribute labs, sports and campus culture, but admission pathways remain distinct.
For newcomer families
Confirm these four points first
This sequence keeps the shortlist realistic while protecting language development and CEGEP prerequisites.
Identify the authority
Use the exact address to confirm CSSRS, another French centre or the ETSB designated territory.
Confirm English eligibility
English public elementary and secondary schooling follows Quebec legal rules; private and CEGEP admissions differ.
Request language support
Ask about welcome classes, francisation, assessment and transition into regular French instruction.
Map the CEGEP route
Choose Secondary 4–5 math and science courses with likely French or English CEGEP programs in mind.

Sherbrooke and Eastern Townships families can access structured instruction without travelling to Montreal.

Frequently asked questions
Sherbrooke school planning
Can any CSSRS student apply to a secondary vocation?
CSSRS states that its secondary vocations can be open to students across its territory regardless of neighbourhood, but admission activities, deadlines, fees and capacity can apply. The regular program remains tied to the neighbourhood school.
Can my child attend an English public school?
The student must normally meet Quebec’s eligibility rules for English-language public education. Eastern Townships School Board then determines the designated school and transportation.
Is Champlain Lennoxville a public CEGEP?
Yes. It is a public English-language CEGEP. Applications are submitted through SRAM, and Law 14 affects English CEGEP capacity, priority and French requirements.
Are Bishop’s College School and Bishop’s University the same?
No. Bishop’s College School is an independent secondary boarding/day school. Bishop’s University is a separate university, although both are associated with the Lennoxville education community.
Does College HC offer in-person classes in Sherbrooke?
College HC’s regular in-person service is in Greater Montreal. Sherbrooke and Eastern Townships students are primarily supported through live online tutoring and parent feedback.
