Quebec City School Guide
Find the right school path in the Capitale‑Nationale.
Compare public and private schools, enriched secondary programs and CEGEP pathways across Québec City, Sainte‑Foy, Sillery, Charlesbourg, Beauport, L’Ancienne‑Lorette and Lévis.
Explore by area
Start with a realistic daily radius
The “best” option on paper can lose its value if the student spends too much time commuting or cannot join school life.
Sainte‑Foy & Sillery
Strong concentration of secondary, private and CEGEP choices, plus access to Université Laval and major transit corridors.
Central Québec & Limoilou
Urban schools, arts and sport pathways, established neighbourhoods and direct access to Cégep Limoilou.
Charlesbourg, Beauport & North
Large residential sectors with CSS de la Capitale or CSS des Premières‑Seigneuries schools and varied local programs.
Lévis & South Shore
A separate school-service territory with its own public and private options; bridge and ferry routines matter.
Understand the system
Four networks families encounter
Language eligibility, municipality and residential address determine which public route is available.
CSS de la Capitale
French public schools across central, northwest and selected Québec City sectors.
- Neighbourhood schools by basin
- PEI, arts, technology and sport options
- Out-of-basin choice depends on space
Premières‑Seigneuries
French public schools serving Beauport, Charlesbourg and communities northeast of the city.
- Verify municipality and boundary
- Programs vary by secondary school
- Transport may differ for special programs
Navigateurs
French public schools across Lévis and parts of the South Shore.
- Separate from Québec City catchments
- Local programs and vocational paths
- Bridge travel is not school transport
Central Québec School Board
English public schooling for eligible students across a very large territory.
- Confirm English eligibility first
- School options are fewer and regional
- Verify designated school and bus route

Compare program fit
What matters beyond the school name?
The strongest match balances learning style, workload, student support, future prerequisites and family logistics.
PEI / international education
Compare selection, projects, language demands, community engagement and readiness for sustained independent work.
Sport‑études
Confirm athlete recognition, partner schedule, travel, fees and the school’s system for missed academic time.
Arts‑études and music
Ask about auditions, required practice, external partners and whether the student wants intensive specialization.
Science and technology
Look at actual courses, projects and the Secondary 4–5 math/science choices needed for future CEGEP admission.
French-language transition
Newcomers should discuss welcome classes, francisation, language assessment and transition into regular instruction.
Regular program with support
A stable local school with effective resource support can be a better fit than a selective program with a difficult commute.
The daily-life test
North Shore or South Shore?
The river is more than a map line. A school choice involving the bridges can affect sleep, activities, parent pickup and winter reliability. Compare the full weekly routine before choosing.
RTC or STLévis
Public transport networks differ by shore, and school hours may not align with the fastest commuter route.
Bridge traffic
Pierre‑Laporte and Québec bridge conditions can turn a simple distance into an unpredictable schedule.
School transportation
Out-of-basin or specialized programs may not include the same bus service as the designated school.
CEGEP campus location
Compare the exact campus—not only the institution name—especially for technical programs and labs.
For newcomer families
Confirm these four points first
This order keeps the shortlist realistic and protects the student’s route toward Secondary 5 and CEGEP.
Identify the authority
Use the exact address to confirm the French service centre, or the CQSB catchment if eligible.
Confirm language rights
English public elementary and secondary schooling follows legal eligibility rules; English CEGEP uses different admission rules.
Ask about francisation
Discuss language assessment, welcome classes and the transition plan for a student new to French schooling.
Protect prerequisites
Plan Secondary 4–5 math and science options around the student’s likely CEGEP programs.

Frequently asked questions
Quebec City school planning
Which school service centre covers my address?
It depends on the municipality and sector. Québec City, Beauport, Charlesbourg and Lévis are not all served by the same centre. Use the exact residential address on the official service-centre tools.
Can my child attend an English public school?
The student must normally meet Quebec’s legal eligibility rules for English-language public elementary or secondary education. Contact Central Québec School Board for confirmation.
Can families choose a French public school outside their basin?
A request may be possible, but acceptance generally depends on available space and may affect transportation. Specialized programs can have separate rules.
Is Champlain–St. Lawrence part of SRACQ?
The college states that it is not a member of SRACQ and applicants use its own online application process. Verify current deadlines, assessments and documents directly with the college.
Does College HC teach in person in Quebec City?
College HC’s regular in-person service is in Greater Montreal. Québec City and Lévis students are primarily supported through live online tutoring, assessments and parent feedback.
