UNDERSTANDING THE SYSTEM

Quebec’s Welcome Class (Classe d’accueil)

A Bridge Into Quebec’s French-Language Schools

Since French is the official language of instruction in Quebec, students who arrive without sufficient French are placed in a Welcome Class — known as classe d’accueil or classe de francisation. These classes are designed to help non-francophone students build the linguistic foundation they need to integrate into a regular French-language classroom.

The program is part of the ILSS framework (Intégration linguistique, scolaire et sociale), which combines intensive French instruction with academic and social integration. Students typically remain in a Welcome Class for around 10 months, with the option to extend up to a second year if more support is needed before transitioning into a mainstream classroom.

Welcome Classes exist at both the elementary and secondary levels — but the experience, expectations, and challenges look quite different at each stage. With years of experience in the industry, our company has established a strong reputation for excellence and reliability. ELEMENTARY WELCOME CLASS (CLASSE D’ACCUEIL — PRIMAIRE)

For students aged roughly 5 to 12. The focus is on oral communication, basic reading and writing, and an introduction to the routines, values, and culture of Quebec schools. Younger learners often acquire French quickly through immersion, daily interaction with peers, and play-based learning. Many transition into a regular class within one school year.

SECONDARY WELCOME CLASS (CLASSE D’ACCUEIL — SECONDAIRE)

For students aged roughly 12 to 17. The challenge is greater: alongside learning French, students must also develop the academic vocabulary needed for subjects like math, science, history, and geography — taught entirely in French. The window for integration is shorter, the curriculum more demanding, and CEGEP placement is already on the horizon. Targeted support outside the classroom often makes a decisive difference.

WHY EXTRA SUPPORT MATTERS

The Welcome Class is a strong foundation, but classroom time alone is rarely enough — especially at the secondary level. Personalized tutoring helps students close gaps faster, master the vocabulary specific to their grade-level subjects, and build the confidence needed to participate in lessons taught entirely in French.

Our Class Formats

We offer two formats so families can choose the support that best fits their child. Group classes are organized by French level — not by school grade — so students learn alongside peers at a similar stage. Private tutoring offers fully customized one-on-one support.

– Small Group

A structured weekly group class for students currently in or transitioning out of Welcome Classes. Unlike school grade groupings, our classes are organized by French proficiency level — so each student learns alongside peers at a similar stage of language development. Lessons cover listening, speaking, reading, writing, and the academic vocabulary needed across school subjects.
